Abstract This article explores how texts differentiate between traditional white norms and multicultural realities, while focusing on the gender construction embedded in texts with hair as the primary variable under investigation. Specifically, the work examines nine various children's texts and argues for continued improvement in the areas of literacy construction for children readers who are at the earliest stage of interpreting written texts about hair, gender and power.
